ok I buy my switch plates(SWP's) for $1.00cad each, localy.
and they are not blanks. in the first pic the one on the right shows that even CHEAP SWP's that are megnetic arnt bad.
this pic compares a new one before prep, and several used for 4 months, and the one on the right is 4 months of use also, but just used it as a positive to prep my next plates. Notice that only the top is brown, that was the part not in the evectolyte during preping new plates.
And I has the one on the right even more scored that it is now, seems to smooth out.

and the cleaner on is the one that had tape on it.
