One 50.2 MPG Toyota Tercel Recipe

Hello! Just wanted to share the way I made my car run 50.2 MPG I'm still tuning, so hopefully will get better numbers...

Car: Toyota Tercel 98, manual transmission
Stock (Measured Prior to MODS) Average MPG: 36.7 MPG (mixed, see testing bellow)
    Rated: 39 MPG Highway
Modded (Measured after MODS): 50.2 MPG (mixed)

Testing: All testing performed running same daily route which include both city and highway.
MPG calculated from 200-300 miles trips
    Using 87 octane regular gas
    400 Watt music
A/C always ON (hot weather in Puerto Rico)

    Mods:
Only One Wide Mouth Glass Jar $39 (parts)
    MAP sensor enhancer $18 (parts)
    Disconnected Exhaust Manifold Oxygen sensor

    Jar:
    3/4 tsp Baking Soda @ 3 amps
No checkvalves and No arrester on a single line for the intake manifold

Before you burn up your engine, I suggest you do a test of your system...

First, get one of these: http://www.shopwiki.co.uk/detail/q=E...jumpToFirst=t/

    Take an EGT level reading.

Then hook your O2 sensor back up and disconnect your MAP enhancer and W4G system (make the car stock)

    Check your EGT levels again.

I bet you will find that your first reading is much higher than your second. This will mean that your W4G is not producing enough HHO to compensate for the amount you leaned your engine down to. I would really hate for you to burn up your engine.

I totally concur with Qhack. You will be lucky to get 250ml per minute with the glass jar set-up. Your gains are coming from leaning which is dangerous to the engine.

Thanks for your suggestion, will do that.
What EGT readings are you getting from your vehicles?
    Before and after MODS?
All cars run different, but would like to have a general baseline.

I would sincerely suggest that you create your own baseline as all vehicles can be *VERY* different.

For my Dodge, I took readings for:

    Idle
    30 mph
    40 mph
    50 mph
    55 mph
Full throttle from standstill to 70 mph

This will give you a good sheet to compare against, I would aim for your EGT to remain fairly close to the baseline.

Can you get by with knowing your coolant temperature before and after mods? My Scanguage has a guage for coolant temperature.

Nope, coolant temperature is regulated by the thermostat and isn't necessarily an indication of combustion temp.

I'm waiting for my EGT to arrive will post results when available.
I'm optimistic of the final result of this measurement...
1- I was getting 43 MPG with the glass jar alone (no enhancer)
2- In theory HHO and water products should help cool engine cylinders during combustion
3- I have not leaned my engine to much, I'm far from stall set point
4- I have read my sparkplugs and don't seem to be overheated
5- I'm a passive cruise driver, so I don't abuse the engine with WOT acceleration

I think some people may experience better gain with less HHO and no mods. I'm not saying he is, becasue it could be the o2 sensor being disconnected.
