    Feedback on Dry Cell construction.

Need some feedback on the dry cell I'm attempting to build. I've got 13 steel electrical box covers from home depot, 4"x4" and cut a sheet of rubber 1/8" thick into gaskets to go between them. I think I'll configure it +nnnnn-nnnnn+

I'm just wondering about drilling holes. One hole in the top for the gas to pass through, but I'm wondering I should do one hole at the bottom, or two for better circulation of the water. See pic below. Also wonder how big I should make the holes.

    Pics below.

    Thanks for your help.

I do not want to rain on your parade but those galvanized plates will not last even a few hours. Your water will turn to complete muck and the plates will erode until gone. You really need stainless to get this done. I aooreciate the effort but normal steel will rust and corrode away.

    Sorry

Thanks guys, glad I posted here before I build. I'll return those plates and find something in stainless. What about other metals, aluminium for example?

If you want a better material than stainless there are really only 2 choices. The best is platinum but at $1100.00 per ounce I doubt that you will chose that one. The other is pure nickel. It is around double the cost of stainless but I beleive would be far better. It is a far better conductor and more corrosion resistant. I am surprised that I do not see someone using it.

So I went to a metal supply company and got 13 4"x4" stainless steel plates cut, still going to try +nnnnn-nnnnn+ configuration, I'm going to use the gasgets I cut for the first plates I got, but may replace then with squarer ones later.

Now I have some questions about where to drill holes, and what size the should be. One hole at the top for the gas to exit, and one at the bottom for the water to circulate.

My other thought was to mount the cell at an angle, more like a diamond than a square, that way as the gas is generated it will rise up to the hole making it easier to exit.

I hope you were sold 316L Stainless and not 304 Stainless. By the looks of the color of the plates in the photos it looks as though its 304 Stainless, but it may be the lighting. Call the sheet metal shop. 304 will have a slight golden look to it. The others should have told you 316L not just say "Stainless"...

I don't know what it is, I just said Stainless, but it does not have any golden look to it, that is all the light.

I am speaking of the last three photos not the top photo that has an overhead light that is orange/yellow or reflection of light...

Yeah no goldish tint to it. The metal came from left over scrap pieces from stainless used for kitchen appliances, if that gives any clue. Will it not work if it is 304? What will go wrong?
