    I'm about to give up!

I put together this dry cell and not getting the results I think I should be. To generate 8amps cold I need 12 tsp per 2 cups of water. (the unit hold just shy of 2 cups) That seems like an awful lot of lye. I'm scared to add any more. The jar that I use to mix the water and lye gets VERY hot while mixing the two together. I'm only producing .75 LPM as well. Also, after running this configuration for a half hour, the solution is full of little 'snowflakes'. I am using distilled water but am now thinking that the water I bought isn't what it says it is. Any ideas people?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Eric, what do you mean? "the unit holds 2 cups" Do you have a reservoir for that dry cell? how big is that? I have basically the same cell, with the end plates being Neg. and the inside plate, just one, being positive. I have a 2 gallon reservoir. It has proven to keep the heat down. I have mixed 1 lb of lye to 1 Gallon of water. I am currently rebuilding my design and am incorporating 2 cells. I was not getting results either, until I mixed the solution stronger with about 1 1/4 pounds to 1 gallon. My amps got to about 22 and my output was close to 2 liters/ minute. With no PWM. Keep it up. Make a large reservoir and increase the lye! mulenson

The cell holds just under 2 cups and the remainder I put in my bubbler. What about the 'snow flakes'? If I let it go further, it turns into brow sludge like it has in the past. 12 tsp of lye to 2 cups water seemed a bit excessive to me, it isn't out of the norm?

For KOH it takes 10 Lbs per gallon to reach 28% saturation. (lye is in that same neighborhood) 12 tsp is nothing!! http://www.ashtachemicals.com/products/kohchem.htm

By the way 96 watts producing .75 LPM is very good in my book. I'll bet it a good mmw
(cant find my MMW calculator link, and right now I'm having a hard time to remember how to do it long hand.)

    Found it.http://site.altpropulsion.com/MMWCalc.htm

8 amps at 13 volts is about 7MMW that's a great numbers. double or triple your lye and you should be getting your production up there.

    Roland

I think you may be off by a few lbs. on your 28% KOH to water ratio. This measurement is by weight and water weighs about 8.33 lbs per US gallon. therefore it takes about 2 1/2 lbs. of KOH to 1 gallon distilled to get a 28% ratio.

Also here's another MMW calc. that has more detailed info:
