ammeter overheating

Has anybody had any problems with the on board ammeter over heating?

I imagine that you mean the shunt on the meter. That is the chunk of metal or resistor that develops the voltage for the meter to read.

If the manufacturer designed it marginally, it probably would be pretty hot at the upper limits of it's rated current.

If that is the case, you could buy an ammeter that has a higher range than you need and it would run cooler.

I had one on an electric car that caught on fire, (my fault).

Yeah, i have had a fire too. Any recommendations on a good gauge? The one i have is a $20 one from Advance Auto. It is rated, the numbers go up to 60 ampsbut it cannot handle 30 amps

Also make sure your connections are tight. Loose connections cause heat as well.
