316 vs 316L

hi there, quick question, my local metal supplier only keeps 316 stainless in stock, not 316L, would it be a bad idea to buy the 316 for my dry cell i want to make?

Hi,

You can safely buy 316. As long as you don't weld it, there's no difference really.

316 L has a slightly lower carbon content which gives it the ability to resist rust and corrosion better. When drilling or cutting or sanding on either, you must use new unused tools on the stainless you chose. The carbon that may be on the tools from previous use will cause rust to form on the stainless. Basically you devote the tools that you will use on your stainless to that and that only.
316 will suffice but you want to follow the passivisation procedure correctly.
