Of course you can, it's a Mercedes engine.. Is yours turbo'd or not? If no turbo, then that would be the quickest and most dependable way to improve your mileage. I did find this-

OM601 and OM602 are produced by MB and the OM661 and OM662 under licence by SsangYong
OM662LA is the turbo version, using STT kits (I think)
The engine is a 2.9L five cylinder in line driven by a duplex timing chain with hydraulic lifters
Most OM602 parts are interchangeable with OM662
All NA OM662's had the piston oil sprays fitted, important for later turbo conversion
    Injection pump is Bosch, mechanical
    Pre-1996 Musso's had a Mercedes OM602
Ssangyong apparently de-tuned these engines - one comment I found suggested this was because of idle noise. A couple of simple pump adjustments could yield a max of 110hp on NA
Ssangyong actually made the MB100 & MB140 Sprinter, which both had the OM662
The Musso was introduced with the Mercedes M104, M111 & OM602 (hence the auto bell housing compatibility with the M102 in the 230GE)
OM662 has bigger, better water pump from the 150hp OM605

So yes, you can adjust to your satisfaction...
