Suggestions for cleaning plates of an old dry cell

I am rebuilding an old dry cell. The plates I have are actually in very good shape but I am wondering if anyone has suggestions of how best to clean these before I rebuild them into a new cell? Just clean water and a scrubbing? Or, is there some better method?

Ive read to soak them in vinegar to help remove oils and stuff from touching them.

Muriatic Acid. You only need a little. You can be sure you've got them clean.

CLR also works pretty well for removing the rust.
